Galapagos Islands San Cristóbal - The charming island in the east

Galapagos island San Cristóbal is the perfect starting point to visit the archipelago. It has the best information centre among the Galapagos Islands which includes a well-documented exhibition on human and natural history. It also provides comprehensive information regarding conservation in the Galapagos Islands. Puerto Baquerizo Moreno is the provincial capital of the Galapagos Islands and home to more than 500 sea lions. You can find them lazing around beaches or on the waterfront. The Charles Darwin’s monument overlooks the town, and the local university (Universidad San Francisco) is a place where researchers, scientists, and volunteers from all around the world come together to collaborate. While the airport is located at the edge of the town, there are around three flights each day bringing travellers to different islands and cities.

Facts about Island San Cristóbal

San Cristóbal is possibly the easternmost and oldest of the Galapagos Islands. It is situated at the southwestern tip of the island with the largest source of freshwater in the archipelago. The El Junco lagoon forms a beautiful lake that can be reached by taxi or bus from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. On its shores, you can explore the Miconia zone and see the moorhens and Galapagos pintails. The western side of San Cristóbal Island is very fertile and is dominated by the 730-meter Mount Cerro San Joaquín.

Punta Pitt is the easternmost point in the Galapagos Islands, and it can be reached by boat. The scenic volcanic tuffs are well loved by travelers and geologists. Punta Pitt is also the only location in the Galapagos Islands where you can see three species of boobies in a single place.
